Shawna - in the eighth paragraph above - you are referring to Martha's statements, right? Not Mary's? Twice you've used Mary's name there when it seems that you meant Martha.

Is this an error or am I missing something?

Thank you for the helpful insights. Maybe we shouldn't overlook the close relationship that Martha presumably shares with Jesus. Martha also is doing a most undignified act in her day, complaining about housework (preparing a meal) to Jesus when custom dictated that she should have done so unseen and unheard.

I am recommending this post to the women in our Precepts Study of John. I enjoyed thinking about Martha's status with Peter since she is a bumbler too. It's good to know that we are loved in the process of working out our faith, and that God can do something with the misconceptions we carry though we have our faces turned in the right direction. I also enjoyed thinking that Lazarus, the star of this passage, never says a word, and that the theology comes from the women. Cool.

Thank you for your comments. A.Lin Fred Craddock's Luke in the Interpretation commentary series is a great resource for preaching or teaching on Luke. I highly recommend it.

Nice work and what insight! I really like this piece. I had not noticed the parallel between Martha's confession and Peter's. Thanks for sharing. -- Chuck

I am preaching on February 4th, and I have been drawn to this Luke 10 passage. That is the one that I will preach on. It is wonderful to read your blog and see that we are coming out in the same place. For the first part of my sermon, I will focus on the hospitality; but then I plan to focus on Luke's emphasis of a radical change.

Thank you for posting this. While I had not done a great deal of research (I have had a lot of the Spirit's guidance for this upcoming sermon), it is good to see that I have gotten the point.
