Thank you for this Shawana, as a British Christian who had no church background/ grounding until her twenties I find this whole area fascinating not least because it does seep into all streams of Christianity. Patriarchy’s grip is firm!

Frymer-Kensky is negative about about modern Goddess language and spirituality, but I think that has more to do with her radical monotheism than anything else.

I didn’t think she was unfair to ME cultures in either book. In fact, I thought her research was excellent on that score.

I haven’t seen Motherprayer. I’ll have to look for it.

Great stuff on Abigail, Shawna!

Frymer-Kensky is quite a scholar and I love her Motherprayer book…However, my recollection is that she is also overly negative and biased against any kind of modern Goddess language or spirituality, as well as unfair to the Middle Eastern cultures that had them.
